HISTORY
CASPS was created in the summer of 1994 by a
group of concerned educators and citizen leaders. Their primary purpose was
to lay the foundation of a grass roots organization that would address the
social and educational needs of immigrant children in public schools. Their
mandate was to find solutions by collaborating with school districts and
administrators and by directly working with students and parents. To
fulfill the organization’s call for action, they began to serve as
advocates, mediators and interpreters. Positive feedback from schools and
families and the growing demand for intervention from the community,
provided the impetus for expansion into case management services, academic
counseling and group therapy, staff development workshops for teachers, and
a special effective parenting program available in Armenian, English and
Spanish.
To date, CASPS has served over 3000 children and
parents in all ethnic groups. In the Glendale Unified School District, our
organization has enjoyed many years of collaboration with the Healthy Start
Program, addressing problems and making a positive difference. In the Los
Angeles Unified School District, we have worked with the Madison Community
Collaborative, participating in diversity programs planning, conducting
workshops, and contributing to inter-group understanding and cooperation.
To recognize academic achievement, CASPS established an
annual event honoring all Armenian students graduating with a GPA of 3.5 or
more, from Glendale schools. This celebration has become an educational
tradition and includes scholarship awards. |
